Meet The "Spearfishing Huntress" Who Is Taking The Internet By Storm

Valentine Thomas says she is hoping to raise awareness about ocean preservation through her hobby.

This is 28-year-old Valentine Thomas. She used to work in finance in the United Kingdom, but in her spare time had a pretty intense hobby.

instagram.com

Thomas spends her weekends spearfishing, a hobby she picked up about four years ago. She told BuzzFeed News she was hooked by the experience of being in the ocean and eating what you catch.

"I really encourage sustainable eating and spearfishing is definitely one of its purest forms in my opinion," she said. "You catch exactly what you want to eat and there is no 'collateral damages' to it."

instagram.com

The Canadian is already a world record holder in the sport, having speared the world's largest Atlantic Jack.

instagram.com

Thomas began posting snaps of her fishing to Facebook and Instagram, and has since become a social media sensation. She said the first time she posted a picture with a fish to Facebook, she woke up to one thousand friend requests.

"The first reaction is being flattered...and probably vanity I must admit," she said. "But then you realize that you are actually able to reach people and that means you might be able to make an actual difference."

FIFA President Sepp Blatter Says He Probably Won't Step Down Until 2016

In a new interview, Blatter confirmed that he will not seek reelection to soccer’s top post — but a leadership change won’t be happening soon.

Embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter said an election to replace him will probably happen in early 2016, putting to rest weeks of speculation and seemingly contradictory statements about his departure.

Embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter said an election to replace him will probably happen in early 2016, putting to rest weeks of speculation and seemingly contradictory statements about his departure.

FABRICE COFFRINI / Getty Images

Speaking to the Swiss newspaper Walliser Bote, Blatter said that he will not be a candidate for re-election to the top post of soccer's world governing organization, the Associated Press reported.

"I am not a candidate, but the elected president," Blatter told the newpaper. "And I want to hand over FIFA in good condition."

However, Blatter said the election to replace him probably wouldn't happen until early 2016. He explained the timing by saying that FIFA rules require a four-month election campaign, noting also that the Club World Cup is scheduled for December.

The interview with Walliser Bote took place several days ago and was published Saturday.

Blatter called the decision to leave the post "definitely liberating."

"It was the only way to take away the pressure from FIFA and my employees, including (pressure) from the sponsors," Blatter said. "To remove FIFA and me personally from the line of fire."

Blatter made headlines on June 5 when, in the wake of a corruption scandal that rocked FIFA, he apparently announced his resignation. In his statement, Blatter said that FIFA "needs an overhaul" and he would consequently not seek reelection.

Blatter also said in the statement that he planned to push for an election "at the earliest opportunity."

Though the announcement was widely described as Blatter's resignation, he later told Swiss newspaper Blick "I did not resign."

FIFA downplayed the comments, saying they did not contradict his earlier statement.

News of the case broke in May when police arrested seven officials at a gathering in Zurich, Switzerland. A total of 14 officials and executives were later indicted in the U.S. on corruption charges.

Blatter was not among those indicted, but officials have said he was the subject of investigation.

A Day At Michael Vick's Football Camp

Isaiah Hendricks

Lindsey Adler/BuzzFeed News

Five-year-old Isaiah Hendricks wandered directionless around the football field at John B. Todd Stadium in Newport News, Virginia, this past Saturday morning.

“Where’s DeSean Jackson?” he wondered aloud to no one in particular.

Hendricks and 175 other children, all between 6 and 17 years old, were there to attend a football mini-camp hosted by quarterback Michael Vick. Vick, the former number one NFL draft pick who returned to the league in 2009 after his conviction for running a multi-state dog-fighting circuit, introduced himself to the assembled children and teens as “the best free agent on the market.” He brought friends and former teammates LeSean McCoy (now with the Buffalo Bills), DeSean Jackson (the Washington Redskins), and Falcons receiver Roddy White, who described Vick as “my dude for over 11 years.”

Vick said he runs the one-day camp in his hometown – now in its second year – to give back to the city that supported him during his trial and subsequent rehabilitation tour and return to the NFL. “Inner-city kids need events like this for structure, they need it for confidence, and they need it for leadership,” he explained, adding that 74 kids participated last year. This time around, 20 had the $75 registration fee waived.

It was a sweltering, sunny morning. The football portion of the camp was chaos. Participants wore various jerseys — but no pads or helmets — and were told to assign themselves into categories such as receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks. Groups were not divided by age, lending to mismatched gaggles of players. The initial squad of offensive linemen, for example, small in number but large in height and build, were joined by a 5-foot-tall redheaded kid whose ambition outmatched his wingspan.

Vick and Hendricks

Lindsey Adler/BuzzFeed News

Cones outlined running routes, and Jackson, White, and other coaches handed off the ball as the kids stumbled over their own feet.

“Don’t stop running when you catch it! Keep going!” was shouted more than a few times.

At just over 3 feet tall, Hendricks was probably the shortest player on the field. He spent most of the afternoon being picked on by older kids who cut him in line.

Hendricks didn’t sweat it. Michael Vick is his hero, and his mother, Terrika, giggled as she played a video of Isaiah crying the day Vick was cut from the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately for Hendricks, most of his other favorite players have been recently scrapped from the team too. The Eagles’ Chip Kelly "is not the best coach ever,” the 5-year-old said.

Vick told BuzzFeed News he hopes the football camp will help kids feel supported by their community, like he was. He also places a strong emphasis on helping them make good decisions, build character, and navigate tricky situations as they proceed into adulthood.

This manifested itself in some surprising ways during lunch hour, when Vick, his fellow NFL stars, and some of his closest friends sat down to talk with the high school–age teens.

Vick’s cousin, Dwight, ran an “exercise” in which troublesome scenarios were described and the players advised the teens on how to handle them. Many of the hyper, restless teens were plainly too young to understand the scenarios, but the theme is to teach ‘em when they’re young.

Roddy White

Lindsey Adler/BuzzFeed News

In the first scenario, Dwight described a situation involving a sexual assault on campus in which a top college football recruit attends a party with some other prospective players. Other partygoers tell the recruit that there’s “a girl upstairs.” But he elects to go home instead of pursue a sexual encounter. “The next day,” Dwight said, “you hear she’s alleging she was raped by the host of the party. What do you do?”

The teenage boy who was chosen to give a response said he “wouldn’t want to disrespect anyone, but I wouldn’t rat out anyone.”

The professionals shook their heads — then offered only vague advice. “Try not to end up in that situation,” said Vick. “When something sounds like a good time but you know deep down in your heart that it’s bad, you’ve gotta walk away.”

It was a topical question; Jameis Winston, the first-overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, has long faced allegations that he raped a woman at Florida State during his freshman year. But other than Vick’s suggestion to “avoid situations,” the young player’s suggestion not to “rat out” a prospective teammate was left hanging out there. No one offered any more, seemingly necessary, specific guidance.

Other scenarios involved friends smoking weed and teammates taking “pills” — in each exercise, the prospective recruit was assumed to have abstained.

One high schooler said players have to be vigilant in “choosing who you hang out with.” Vick loved this. He shot to his feet, asked the kid to identify his parents, who were standing in the back of the room with the other adults, and told them they’ve “done a great job” raising their son.

Young prospective athletes struggle immensely with “decision making,” Vick told BuzzFeed News later. “I think there’s a lot of peer pressure, a lot of influencing, and you’ve just gotta be able to overcome those obstacles in life.”

When asked what he’d tell kids if his own career were used as an example, Vick said he “couldn’t really tell them anything” because dog fighting is universally understood to be morally wrong. “It’s not an excuse, but I think if somebody would have told me, ‘These are the rules,’ it probably would never have happened,” he said.

Lindsey Adler/BuzzFeed News

The panelists, who, along with most of the participants, were black, also discussed the current issues concerning race in America. Three days earlier and two states away in Charleston, South Carolina, 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine black people during a Bible study at a historic church. The Charleston shooting is the most recent tragedy in a two-year series of highly public murders of black Americans — many at the hands of white police officers — that have rekindled pointed questions about racial equality in the United States.

During the camp, White, who is from Charleston, declined an opportunity to discuss the news from his hometown.

For a few attendees, grief over another shocking death led to their participation in the camp. In August 2014, Lennon Lacy, a 17-year-old football player in Bladenboro, North Carolina, was found hanging from a swing set near a mobile-home park. His death was originally ruled a suicide, but the FBI is investigating other explanations, including lynching. (The FBI didn't immediately respond to a request from BuzzFeed News.)

Felisa Brown, a North Carolina–based paralegal whose firm is representing Lacy’s family, brought a few of his teammates to the football camp to “give them a break” from grieving. “It’s so tough to talk to them about this kind of stuff,” Brown said.

At the end of the lunchtime discussion, LeSean McCoy, who recently spoke his mind on Eagles coach Chip Kelly cutting “all the good black players,” spoke passionately about how black players are portrayed in the news.

“One mistake and [the media will] make you look like a gangster,” said McCoy. “It’s especially important for a black player. Make one mistake and they’ll turn on you.”

The kids, now restless, shuffled in their seats and chattered with each other.

“Please pay attention,” McCoy pleaded. “This is important.”

Elton Brown, a guard who played at the University of Virginia and for the Arizona Cardinals, said, “It’s a different world now. Be careful who you hang with and be careful of where you go.”

New Evidence Reportedly Reveals Pete Rose Bet On Baseball As A Player, Despite Denials

The former Cincinnati Red, who holds the all-time record for hits, has been banned from baseball since 1989.

ESPN has obtained scans from a notebook that they report disproves Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose's claim that he did not bet on baseball while he was an active player, only as a manager.

ESPN has obtained scans from a notebook that they report disproves Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose's claim that he did not bet on baseball while he was an active player, only as a manager.

Al Behrman / AP

Rose – who holds the all-time record for hits with 4,256 and is nicknamed the "Hit King" – has been banned from baseball since 1989, when a thorough investigation found he'd bet on the outcomes of games while he was managing the Cincinnati Reds. He has long claimed he never bet against the Reds.

MLB's Rule 21 states: "Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible."

Rose has claimed he never bet on games while he was an active player. ESPN points out that in April, Rose went on an ESPN radio show and told the host he ""Never bet as a player: That's a fact."

Since April 2015, Rose has worked as an analyst for Fox Sports. In March 2015, Rose applied for reinstatement to the league under new Commissioner Rob Manfred.

Copies of scans from a notebook investigators took during a 1989 raid on the home of a Rose associate appear to show bets Rose placed during 1986, while he was a player and coach for the Reds.

ESPN / Via espn.go.com

The results of their findings are summarized as such:

• In the time covered in the notebook, from March through July, Rose bet on at least one MLB team on 30 different days. It's impossible to count the exact number of times he bet on baseball games because not every day's entries are legible.

• But on 21 of the days it's clear he bet on baseball, he gambled on the Reds, including on games in which he played.

• Most bets, regardless of sport, were about $2,000. The largest single bet was $5,500 on the Boston Celtics, a bet he lost.

• Rose bet heavily on college and professional basketball, losing $15,400 on one day in March. That came during his worst week of the four-month span, when he lost $25,500.

Rose declined to comment for the story, but later released a statement to ESPN reporter T.J. Quinn:

Since we submitted the application earlier this year, we committed to MLB that we would not comment on matters relating to reinstatement. I need to maintain that. To be sure, I'm eager to sit down with Mr. Manfred to address my entire history — the good and the bad — and my long personal journey since Baseball. That meeting will come sometime after the All Star break. Terefore at this point it's not appropriate to comment on any specifics.

While banned from baseball, Rose is not eligible to be elected to the MLB Hall of Fame. If he were to be reinstated by Manfred, he would have to be voted in through an executive committee.

Golden State Warriors Win First NBA Championship Since 1975

For the Warriors and their fans, the Game 6 decision was the exclamation point on a dream-come-true season for the long-luckless team.

After finishing their season 67–15 with an average of 110 points per game, 26-year-old point guard Steph Curry was named league MVP.

The Warriors swept the New Orleans Pelicans in four games, then defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in six to face the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference Finals. A five-game run through the Rockets put them in their first NBA Finals series since 1976, where they faced the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by 4x MVP LeBron James.

The Cavs team, which already lacked significant depth, was rocked by the loss of point guard Kyrie Irving, who suffered a fractured kneecap in the first game of the series. The Cavs were already without three-time All-Star Kevin Love, whose season ended with a shoulder injury.

And yet, despite the depleted roster, the Cavaliers, specifically LeBron James, gave the flashy Warriors a run for their money for the second and third games of the series. James averaged over 45 minutes in the first five games of the series. Australian point guard Matthew Dellavedova played a prominent role in tripping up the Warriors — specifically Curry — on their path to the Championship.

The Warriors shot TK% on field goals and TK% on three-pointers in the Game 6 victory. Curry shot an unbelievable 101 three-pointers in 594 total points during the Warriors' 21 playoff games. Curry's right-hand man, Klay Thompson, had a relatively quiet playoffs run, shooting 40% on threes. Andre Igoudala, who was tasked with guarding the explosive LeBron James during the finals, was arguably the most important piece to the Warriors Finals puzzle.

The Warriors will return to Oakland with the team's first championship since 1975. A Bay Area team last clinched a championship on their home field in 1974, when the A's won the World Series.

A parade, which will likely be held Friday morning, is reportedly planned to be held in Oakland, home of the Warriors since 1971.
