ESPN Shuts Down Grantland Less Than Six Months After Split With Bill Simmons

The site will cease to operate “immediately,” ESPN announced Friday.

Mike Windle / Getty Images

ESPN on Friday announced that it is shutting down Grantland, the sports and culture website started by Bill Simmons in 2011.

"Effective immediately, we are suspending the publication of Grantland," the company said in a statement Friday at the same time staffers were informed of the news. Other writers announced that they had learned the news on Twitter.

Though the site will be suspended immediately, staffers' contracts with ESPN will remain in effect. Each staffer was to meet with ESPN brass Friday to discuss and negotiate contract obligations and their individual roles.

In May, it was announced that ESPN would not be renewing Simmons' contract, and Chris Connelly was appointed interim editor-in-chief. Simmons began a new role with HBO in October, and has hired away a number of former Grantlanders to join his project.

Other Grantland staffers, such as Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Wesley Morris and early hire Rembert Browne, have taken positions elsewhere. Personnel departures played a large role in ESPN's decision to shutter the beloved sports site.

Grantland featured a mix of sports and culture writing, often blended together into longform features that ran under Simmons. ESPN said there are still many spaces within the brand for longform and intelligent sportswriting, but culture topics — television, film, music — will not be a fit going forward.

Though ESPN runs two other sites aimed at audiences beyond sports — Nate Silver's 538 and The Undefeated, which focuses on the intersection of race and sports — the decision to shutter Grantland is not intended to reflect on how those sites will be run by ESPN.

Recently, ESPN laid off 350 employees, but waited to make an independent decision about Grantland instead of announcing the decisions all at once.

Throughout the six months of turbulence since Simmons left, the future of Grantland has loomed over the site and its employees.

On Twitter, Simmons called ESPN's treatment of Grantland employees "simply appalling."

The full ESPN statement is below:

After careful consideration, we have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact across our enterprise.

Grantland distinguished itself with quality writing, smart ideas, original thinking and fun. We are grateful to those who made it so. Bill Simmons was passionately committed to the site and proved to be an outstanding editor with a real eye for talent. Thanks to all the other writers, editors and staff who worked very hard to create content with an identifiable sensibility and consistent intelligence and quality. We also extend our thanks to Chris Connelly who stepped in to help us maintain the site these past five months as he returns to his prior role.

Despite this change, the legacy of smart long-form sports story-telling and innovative short form video content will continue, finding a home on many of our other ESPN platforms.

Sepp Blatter Tells Russian Media FIFA Scandal “Has Nothing To Do With Criminal Activity”

Ivan Sekretarev / AP Photo

In an extensive Q&A with TASS, a Russian news agency, FIFA president Joseph “Sepp” Blatter shared his opinions on the current state of the FIFA administration. He maintained that the scandal was spurred largely by years of accumulating animosity between him and Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) president Michel Platini.

“I think this crisis, and this is also the idea of my lawyers, has nothing to do with any criminal activity,” Blatter said. “So it was by perception.”

The tension between Blatter and Platini appears to have begun in 2010, when FIFA began deliberating over who would host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments.

Blatter told TASS that it had been previously decided that the 2018 World Cup would be held in Russia and the next one would be held in America, but Blatter allegedly intervened and submitted a nomination for Qatar to host in 2022. The move, he said, “has changed all pattern.”

Blatter and Platini are currently on suspension from FIFA for 90 days, an announcement made by the FIFA ethics committee on Oct. 8, while the soccer governing body conducts investigations into allegations of corruption.

The FIFA president called the suspensions “total nonsense,” adding that he was not given the opportunity to respond to the call for his temporary departure.

“This is not justice,” he said. “I put these people into the office, where they are now in the ethics committee, and they don’t even have the courage to listen to the secretary general, Platini, or me.”

Blatter maintained that while the “football has never been so good as now,” the leadership of FIFA is in crisis.

He told TASS that FIFA needs more parity between governing regions, pointing out that Europe has three vice presidents even though Africa has more member associations. He also believes that “we should give more access to women in the executive committee.”

When asked if he had any advice for the future FIFA president, Blatter said, “Don’t forget that FIFA is the most valuable institution in the world.”

“Football is connecting people,” he added. “It makes bridges. This is football and this we cannot abandon.”

Meanwhile Tuesday, the AP reported that seven candidates put their names in the running to be the next president of FIFA. The candidates are Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale, Musa Bility, Jerome Champagne, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, and Michel Platini, whose nomination is pending since he's been suspended.

A breakdown of the candidates shows that three are from Europe, two from Africa, and two from Asia. A three-man election panel will first vet the candidates and will then announce next month which have been "officially accepted," according to the AP.

Royals Pitcher Learns His Father Has Died Moments Before World Series Debut

Edinson Volquez’s father reportedly died just before Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday night. It was unclear how the pitcher found out about the death.

ESPN reported the death, saying Daniel Volquez, 63, died of heart disease complications.

Royals spokeman Mike Swanson told BuzzFeed News in an email that Volquez's wife initially asked that he not be told about his father's death. Volquez eventually did find out about the death, though Swanson said he did not know when that happened.

The Royals were playing the New York Mets in Kansas City Tuesday night, and Volquez served as his team's starting pitcher.

According to the AP, Volquez was introduced to baseball as a 10-year-old by his father, who worked professionally as a mechanic. Volquez has described his parents as his biggest supporters, the AP also reported.

World Series Halted After Fox Experiences "Technical Difficulties"

For a few moments in the fourth inning, viewers at home were unable to watch the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals, forcing a delay of game.

David Goldman / AP

Game 1 of the World Series was temporarily brought to a halt Tuesday night after an unknown "technical glitch" knocked Fox's broadcast off the air.

A Fox announcer said on-air the "broadcast issue" occurred after a transmission truck unexpectedly lost power at the stadium.

The glitch lasted about 7 minutes, with the Associated Press reporting it started at USA at 9:19 p.m. and the game resuming at 9:26 p.m. ET.

For a few moments in the fourth inning, viewers at home were unable to watch The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals and Fox was forced to broadcast Major League Baseball's international feed. The Fox broadcast did not start again until 10:02 p.m.

According to reports, the game had to be stopped because officials would not have been able to review plays, but teams eventually agreed to continue without the use of instant replay.

In 2014, video review practices were expanded and teams now have rooms at ballparks where employees can monitor several feeds, and relay information to players in the dugout that allow them to know when to challenge umpires call.

Lenny Dykstra Says He Hired Private Investigators To Intimidate Umpires

Former New York Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra is seen during his sentencing for grand theft auto in this March 5, 2012 file photo.

Nick Ut / AP

Former MLB player and convicted felon Lenny Dykstra said Tuesday that during his playing career he hired a "team of private investigators" to dig up dirt on umpires that he'd use to intimidate them into calling fewer strikes against him.

"I just pulled a half-million bucks out and hired a private investigation team," Dykstra explained Tuesday afternoon on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports.

"Their blood is just as red as ours. Some of them like women, some of them like men, some of them gamble. Some of them do whatever … It wasn’t a coincidence do you think that I led the league in walks the next two years, was it? Fear does a lot to a man."

Dykstra claimed that after an umpire would call a strike against him, he'd turn around and ask, "Did you cover the spread last night?"

Two umpires who worked during Dykstra's playing career have come out as gay; Dale Scott, who came out quietly in 2014 in an issue of Referee Magazine, is an active umpire.

Former umpire Dave Pallone, who resigned after he was outed in 1988, said following the interview that Dykstra had never blackmailed him.

Dykstra claimed to Cowherd that his blackmailing of umpires — which he says started "after he got the money" — is the reason he led the league in walks in 1993. That season, Dykstra walked 129 times. Statistically, his '93 season is drastically different than the years that preceded and followed: Dykstra walked 40 times in 1992 and 68 times in 1994.

Doug Mills / ASSOCIATED PRESS

Cowherd asked Dykstra if this was the first time he had told his story about investigating and blackmailing umpires. Dykstra said yes, and that he has more to say in his upcoming book.

At the beginning of the interview, Dykstra said he spent $500,000 on the private investigator team, but later told Cowherd he'd decided to blackmail the umpires to support his family.

"I had to do what I had to do to win and to support my family," he said.

Dykstra made his MLB debut in 1985 with the New York Mets. He batted leadoff for the Mets during their 1986 World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox. He spent eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, retiring in 1996 at the age of 33 following numerous injuries.

Post-MLB career, Dykstra attempted various business ventures, but filed for bankruptcy in 2009. In 2011, he was arrested for attempting to purchase a stolen car and charged with bankruptcy fraud. Dykstra pleaded no contest to related felonies in 2012 and spent six and a half months in prison.

Dykstra claimed he had a single cell in federal prison between Dr. Conrad Murray — who treated Michael Jackson before his death — and a leader with the Mexican mafia. He claimed he was instructed by the gang leader to read while he was in prison to pass the time.

"I never read a book growing up because I thought it would hurt my eyes for baseball," Dykstra said Tuesday, then claiming he read 300 books during his half-year stint in prison.

Dynamo Kiev Considering Segregating Black Fans To "Avoid Racism"

Champions League football club Dynamo Kiev are considering segregating fans based on the colour of their skin.

The Ukrainian club has been involved in two high profile incidences of racial abuse in European competition this year, and its "Ultras Faction" often clashes with police and with fans of rival clubs.

Dmitry Korotayev / Getty Images

The club hosted Premier League side Chelsea in the Champions League group stage last week, where footage appeared to show four black Kiev fans being racially abused by some of the club's white fans.

youtube.com

Dynamo Kiev's stadium director, Volodimir Spilchenko, has responded to the incident by suggesting non-white fans might be segregated from the rest of the club's crowd in order to try and avoid such incidents.

"We are trying, maybe, to make a separate sector [for black fans] in an attempt to avoid racism," he said in a press conference.

His remark came in response to a question from a journalist about the latest controversy surrounding the club.

But racism in Ukrainian football is not just limited to the stands. Some black fans have complained of suffering abuse around the stadium, and in Kiev's city centre.

How Training To Be An Acrobat Taught Me To Embrace Fear

Christina Chung for BuzzFeed

Before my first real boyfriend broke up with me, he told me who he wished I could be: someone who would take mushrooms and stay out on the beach with him all night, who would yell when she got mad and wouldn’t give a fuck when he yelled back. Someone who’s not afraid of anything, he said, and my throat tightened with the knowledge that I was about to cry.

I was 19 and afraid of a lot of things, like parallel parking on the psychedelically steep hills of San Francisco, and making unprotected left turns during rush hour. I worried about being too straight and suburban for the hipster city kids I’d met in college, and about not understanding art. I was the kind of girl who crumpled into tears instead of yelling. I was afraid of disappointing my parents, of bad trips, and of losing my first love.

We both wanted me to be fearless. I couldn’t.

I fell apart, rebuilt myself, and didn’t think about that conversation for years. But it occurred to me recently that for someone who has never felt particularly brave, who has to be goaded into riding roller coasters and will do so only with my eyes screwed shut, screaming the entire time, I spend a lot of my free time doing things that terrify most reasonable people. The other day I climbed a ribbon of fabric 20 feet to the top of a Brooklyn warehouse and then dove face-first toward the floor. Once a week I strap myself into a 7-foot-tall metal wheel, roll backwards, and let go. On purpose. For fun.

This started four years ago when a friend invited me to her aerial silks class. The last time I’d taken a dance class, it had involved a hot-pink sequined headband and one of those plastic rings that cinched your T-shirt to the side. But in my late twenties, silks — that thing you see in the Cirque du Soleil — was my gateway drug to the circus arts.

Each week I could do something I hadn’t been able to do before.

After playing lacrosse in college, I had struggled with going to the gym after graduation. I was never able to match the urgency that I’d felt chasing down a ball or racing my teammates in wind sprints. And yoga made me feel like an atheist in church — I could never really clear my mind, and I always forgot to breathe. But silks made me feel strong, even as I tied myself in knots while the teacher told me to go to my OTHER left. Each week I could do something I hadn’t been able to do before.

We started on the ground, learning to climb the fabric just like you climb a rope in gym class. It took me an hourlong lesson to get through that part, and a couple of months to build up enough strength to begin working on upside-down poses and drops.

instagram.com

Next I tried flying trapeze, which involves much more height than silks from the getgo and feels scarier, despite being a lot less risky for beginners. (You’re in safety lines and there’s a net underneath you, while in silks there’s only a mat.) A few years later, I added German wheel, a human-sized hamster wheel you ride inside and on top of, and lyra, a metal hoop suspended in midair.

In circus, fear can hold you back, but it’s also very real and very useful.

In circus, fear can hold you back, but it’s also very real and very useful. Make a mistake when you’re seriously high off the ground — a wrong wrap, a missed catch — and you could wind up paralyzed, or dead. It helps to be brave, but this is not a good activity for people who jump first and ask questions later. I have been in classes with them, and it’s terrifying.

As circus types go, I’m a cautious one. My personal terror meter spikes when I rotate my wrist a half-turn to shift my grip or feel for a landing inside the wheel with my feet. Before I try a trick that scares me, I want to know exactly what could go wrong. I need my coach to tell me that I won’t die. It's something my brain may rationally believe, but my gut still won’t. Even after I’ve done something once, I’m often scared to do it again. It takes a long time to transform my initial “I hate this” grimace into a calm, collected performance face.

instagram.com

“If an acrobat wakes up in the morning and doesn’t hurt,” a Russian circus saying goes, “chances are he’s dead.”

I’ve gotten used to the calluses the silks rub into my instep and the raw patches the hoop carves into the small of my back. My aerialist friends and I compare bruises and post the best ones on Instagram. We’ve built up our tolerance, both to pain and to being afraid. We’re not always scared of the same things, but we all share that oh, shit feeling that swells when you’re doing something that pushes your fear button. And we support each other through it, because when your friend is about to plummet face-first from a great height, that is what you do.

In circus, fear is obvious and easy to dissect. It’s about self-preservation, rooted in the awareness of possible pain. Of course I cringe when I’m about to hang my entire body weight from one elbow or ankle. Of course my heart races when I climb above a certain height, or when I’m trying to remember if I wrapped the fabric behind my back just once, or twice — because it will make a crucial difference on the way down.

instagram.com

It’s a lot harder for me to own the feeling of dread that sometimes flickers when I’m staring at my phone, willing myself to dial that final digit, or holding a drink in a crowded bar, searching for a familiar face. “What do you think you’re doing here?” a little voice whispers as I hover at the edge of a conversation, listening for a good moment to break in. “You shouldn’t,” it hisses before I ask my boss for a raise.

The great thing I’ve learned about fear, though, is that you can train yourself to touch it.

My stomach jumps in these moments for the same reason it does when I’m up in the air. My body is trying to protect itself from danger: humiliation and disappointment. A lot of people are afraid of heights and don’t think it’s anything to be embarrassed about. But as someone who went to a quirky liberal arts college where everyone marched joyfully to the beat of their own drum, as a journalist who's supposed to be able to talk to anyone, the fact that I worry about what other people think feels like a secret I should hide.

The great thing I’ve learned about fear, though, is that you can train yourself to touch it. I will never be someone who isn’t afraid of anything, who truly doesn’t give a fuck. But when I feel nervous about telling someone what I really think or asking for what I need, I try to picture myself up in the air, head held high, ready to drop. I remember the first time I stood on top of a giant metal wheel, when my coach told me to let go, and I whimpered, “Why would anyone ever do this?!” before lifting both hands over my head.

“Isn’t it scary, the stuff you do?” people ask me.

Absolutely. And I do it anyway.

Four people were killed and nearly four dozen injured when a driver plowed a car into a crowd at the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade on Saturday.

Police confirmed that a two-year-old boy was among those hit by the car and died later that day.

Adacia Chambers, a 25-year-old woman from Stillwater, Oklahoma, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is in jail, police said at a news conference.

The three adults pronounced dead at the scene were identified in a police statement Sunday as Nakita Prabhakar, 23, Bonnie Jean Stone, 65, and Marvin Lyle Stone, 65. It was not immediately clear whether Bonnie Jean Stone and Marvin Lyle Stone were related, and Stillwater Police could not be reached immediately for further comment. The name of the child killed was not released.

On Sunday, five adults were said to be in critical condition, while six children remained in hospital care.

A total of 51 people, including 12 children, were injured in the crash.

“Victims have been sent to seven different area hospitals,” Stillwater Director of Public Safety Norman McNickle said in a press conference Saturday evening. “Their job is to treat the wounded first and to notify us later.”

Chambers, who was allegedly driving a Hyundai Elantra, is accused of first striking an unmanned police motorcycle and then continuing to drive into the crowd.

Police said she was not part of the parade and was not a student.

Officials did not confirm whether Chambers was injured.

The OSU homecoming football game will be played Saturday night, OSU President Burns Hargis said at the conference. "We're going to remember the victims."

OSU said in a statement that it was "saddened by the tragic parade incident."

Emergency crews and multiple helicopters responded to the scene.
