Janay Rice Tells ESPN Her Side Of The Ray Rice Elevator Incident

Jemele Hill of ESPN of the story on the incident — and the history behind it — that shocked fans and the league.

Earlier today, Ray Rice won his appeal against his indefinite suspension from the NFL and was immediately reinstated to the league.

After the club, our friends from Baltimore, Ray and I decided to go to the late-night restaurant in the casino. Ray and I were bickering. We were drunk and tired and while I know that some people may find it hard to believe, none of the six of us can remember exactly what Ray and I were arguing about. It was that insignificant.

As we were arguing, he was on his phone and not looking at me. I went to reach for his phone, and when he grabbed it back, he spit at me and I slapped him.

We got into the elevator and what happened inside is still foggy to me. The only thing I know -- and I can't even say I "remember" because I only know from what Ray has told me -- is that I slapped him again and then he hit me. I remember nothing else from inside the elevator.

The next thing I do recall is being in the casino lobby, surrounded by cops.

Via espn.go.com

Janay tells the story of how she and her future husband met as teenagers, eventually turning their friendship into a relationship while Ray Rice was at Rutgers. She mentions an often-ignored challenge for wives of NFL players, discussing how difficult it is to transition to a strange, new city and build an identity and life for herself. Rice says that "until this past year, that first one in Baltimore was the most difficult in our relationship. After their daughter Rayven was born, the couple entered premarital counseling as a precautionary measure to set themselves up for success.

Rice explains: "Even though counseling has a certain stigma among both men and women -- especially in the African-American community -- Ray and I wanted to work toward building better communication between us."

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, was taken to Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paolo four days ago, after he developed a urinary tract infection following a surgery to remove kidney stones.

Doctors said the 74-year-old soccer star is "clinically unstable" but "conscious and conversational." He is receiving renal support therapy in the hospital's special care unit. The special care unit is reserved for patients who need a higher level of support but whose condition is not critical enough to merit a bed in intensive care.

In a statement, Pelé reassured his fans that he is doing well, and insisted that the move to the special care unit should not be interpreted as a worsening of his health.

"I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I am doing fine. I was not put into intensive care today, I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only," the statement read.

Considered by many a Brazilian national hero, Pelé led the South American nation's team to three victories at the FIFA World Cup. He holds the record for the most goals scored during league games — a grand total of 541.

10 Things Female NFL Fans Are Tired Of Hearing

We’re forever tired of inexplicably having to defend our football fandom.

"You're a [insert team here] fan?! Name five starting players on the team."

Oh you like coffee? Name five top-selling brands...

Via giphy.com

"Real fans don't talk about how hot the players are."

Interestingly enough, I can assess a player's physical appearance and their performance on the field... AT THE SAME TIME. It's like a superpower.

Via giphy.com

"Girly team gear annoys me. Those girls don't know anything about the game. They are just trying to look cute."

Uhhh right...

Via giphy.com

"Have you ever even been to a game?"

You can't be using that as a serious way to gauge whether I actually follow a team. My socioeconomic status, work schedule, family life, relative location to the team itself, or any other mitigating factor as to why I may or may not have been to a game is a way for you to tell how legit my fandom is? It's called a television.

Bengals' Devon Still Allegedly Hasn't Paid Child Support In Months

The mother of four-year-old Leah Still says her daughter’s medical bills have left them in financial duress.

According to the letter:

Because Mr. Still is refusing to pay child support, Leah and her mother are unable to afford housing and are forced to live with a friend of Channing's mother who has been kind enough to allow them to live in her home.

But for the kindness of this person, Leah and Channing would be homeless because of Mr. Still's failure to pay child support.

In addition, Channing has no car of her own and cannot afford to rent one to transport Leah to the hospital in Philadelphia for treatment. Channing has been forced to ask a friend to please loan her their car to use to take Leah to and from the hospital. Channing should not have to rely on the charitable acts of acquaintances in order to transport Leah to the hospital for the medical care which is so necessary for the health and welfare of her child.

Also, to make matters worse because Mr. Still has declined to pay child support, Channing has had to rely on food stamps in order to feed their child.

Richard Sherman Rips Nonsensical NFL Policies During Surreal Press Conference Involving A Cardboard Man

The NFL wants their players to talk to the media, right?

Earlier this month, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was fined $100,000 for not speaking to media after the game. This week, he found a way to fulfill his obligation in a totally subversive way:

Ray Rice Could Be Reinstated Today Or Tomorrow

The NFL Players Association is arguing he was punished twice for the same incident.

A decision on whether Ray Rice will be reinstated as an NFL player is expected to come "before Thanksgiving."

A decision on whether Ray Rice will be reinstated as an NFL player is expected to come " before Thanksgiving ."

Sean Gardner / Reuters

When TMZ released the now-infamous surveillance tape of Ray Rice knocking his then-fianceé, now-wife, Janay Rice, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell claimed it showed an incident that appeared different, and more severe, than the one described to him by the running back in a meeting earlier this year. After the video became public, Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely and he was cut by the Ravens.

Rice maintains he described the incident accurately in his first meeting with Goodell. Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome reportedly corroborated Rice's story. Still, after that meeting, he was only suspended for two games. It was a controversial move that called into question the league's inconsistent manner of doling out suspensions, and led to an overhaul of the league's Personal Conduct Policy.

The NFLPA argued to a retired judge that Rice was punished twice for the same incident. Football pundits have suggested Goodell handed Rice the indefinite suspension as a way to repair his and the league's own image in the wake of the video's release. The NFLPA's argument that Goodell was fully informed on the situation prior to its release would be consistent with that argument.

David Goldman / AP Photo

A reinstatement would allow a team to sign him, however, that's highly unlikely to happen this season, partially because the league has been hit by a series of player conduct scandals and the attention brought on Rice's new team would be a distraction. There are a few teams in the league, however, who could probably use some depth on their running back roster. But at nearly 28 years old, Rice's skill as a player dropped off significantly in 2013.

The NFLPA has not announced how they will proceed if the arbitrator does not rule for reinstatement.

On the heels of his third World Series win with the San Francisco Giants, 28-year-old third baseman Pablo Sandoval has agreed to a substantial deal with the Red Sox, Jon Heyman of CBS reports .

John Rieger/Usa Today Sports

The structure of the contract has not been disclosed, but is said to be "between $95 million and $100 million."

Prior to the 2014 season, Sandoval and the Giants, the team he first signed with in 2008, could not agree on a long-term contract. It's rumored that Sandoval was looking for a contract similar to what had been offered to Hunter Pence, $90 million over five years.

In this past regular season, Sandoval batted .279 with an OPS of .739. However, in the postseason, his average ballooned up to .366with an OPS of .423. He is a monster in October, and the Red Sox were right to take notice.

Sandoval has been inconsistent over his first seven years in the league. His weight has long been a concern of the Giants, as it's affected his agility and base-running abilities. Sandoval was looking for a longer deal, and he is smart to take the offer from Boston. It is likely that his abilities, already streaky at times, will drop off significantly in the next two or three seasons.

Sandoval's regular salary in 2014 was $8,250,000.

Via cbssports.com

The Red Sox are reportedly also close to a deal with Sandoval's now-former NL West rival, shortstop Hanley Ramirez. His deal is rumored to be $90 million over five.

Jeff Curry/Usa Today Sports

Ramirez appears to be a good fit for the AL. His fielding has been inconsistent, but he is a hard hitter who has consistently finished above league average in OPS. In 2013, he hit .345, .638 SLG, and finished with a 1.040 OPS. He finished the 2014 season (in which he played more games) with .283/.448/.817.

The concept seems simple enough, right? An NBA team wins a game — something they're expected to do 20-50 times per year — and fans get to celebrate by paying 50 percent less to demolish a pizza or two in the name of victory.

Papa John's has a few different promotions with professional sports teams: New Yorkers can get 50 percent off pizza the day after the Yankees score at least six runs; Heat fans also get 50 percent off after wins. Peyton Manning owns a bunch of Papa John's locations and is now making a hell of a lot of money as a second income thanks to legally high Coloradans buying up Papa John's Frito Chili Pizza and whatnot.

Usa Today Sports / Reuters / Reuters

Collins became the first active out gay player in men's professional sports in early 2014. he was signed to the Nets in a series of 10-day contracts, then through the rest of the season.

The day will be especially meaningful for me because the Nets will be playing the Bucks, who are coached by Jason Kidd, my former teammate and my coach in Brooklyn. It was Jason who cheered my decision to come out by posting on Twitter: "Jason's sexuality doesn't change the fact that he is a great friend and was a great teammate."

Considering all the speculation about problems I might face within the locker room, Jason's support was significant. It had been argued that no team would want to take on a player who was likely to attract a media circus from the outset and whose sexuality would be a distraction. I'm happy to have helped put those canards to rest. The much-ballyhooed media blitz to cover me unscrambled so quickly that a flack jokingly nicknamed me Mr. Irrelevant.

Via si.com

After Collins publicly announced that he is gay, a few more athletes came out. Most notably was Michael Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year who was drafted in the final round of the NFL Draft in 2014, then cut from the Rams' and Cowboys' practice squads. Conner Mertens, a kicker for Willamette University in Oregon, became the first active out gay player in college football. Later, Derrick Gordon became the first out gay player in NCAA D-1 basketball. He currently plays for UMass, where he is on the active roster.

Adrian Peterson And The NFL Are Locked In Disagreement Over Possible Disciplinary Action

The league and the NFL Player’s Association seem to have different understandings of how punishment should be determined.

Nearly two weeks ago, Adrian Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor reckless assault charge.

Nearly two weeks ago , Adrian Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor reckless assault charge.

Bob Levey / Getty Images

The settlement effectively resolved the legal matters surrounding Peterson leaving lacerations and marks on his 4-year-old son by hitting him with a "switch."

Though the legal issues have been resolved, Peterson has yet to return to playing football. He was not immediately removed from the Commissioner's Exempt List, the NFL's "purgatory" list that bans the player from participating in team activities, but the league still pays him his full salary.

On Nov. 10, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) released a statement stating that they had "filed an expedited, non-injury grievance to remove Adrian Peterson from the Commissioner's Exempt list based on explicit language in a signed agreement dated Sept. 18, 2014."

As of Nov. 16, Peterson remains on the Commissioner's Exempt List, collecting his full salary of $700,000 per week.

On Saturday, it was reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN that Peterson had "declined to attend" Friday's meeting with the NFL. During that hearing, Peterson would have had the opportunity to present information for the NFL to consider while determining an appropriate punishment for him.

An NFL spokesperson told Schefter, "We will have to address this based on the information currently available to us." But the NFLPA said the NFL had ignored an important detail: it would have been illegal under Texas law for Peterson to turn over documents the NFL had requested.

On Sunday, the NFLPA released a statement on behalf of Adrian Peterson, explaining why he had declined to attend the meeting:

After consulting with the union, I told the NFL that I will attend the standard meeting with the Commissioner prior to possible imposition of discipline, as has been the long-term practice under the [collective bargaining agreement], but I wouldn't participate in a newly created and non-collectively bargained pre-discipline "hearing" that would include outside people I don't know and who would have roles in the process that the NFL wouldn't disclose. [...] The process they are pushing is arbitrary, inconsistent, and contrary to what they agreed to do, and for those reasons, I never agreed to the hearing.

Jon Heyman of CBS reports that the Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton have agreed to a 13-year deal for $325 million.

However, his $25 million yearly salary falls (considerably) short of the record.

The Game of Thrones writer is a dedicated fan of the game of throws.

If you've ever shielded your eyes while watching Game of Thrones and cursed the man who created the show, just know that he, too, is shielding his eyes every Sunday while watching another onscreen struggle: The New York Jets attempting to play football.

Even a man who’s built a career on imagining the unimaginable was shocked by the Jets’ 20-13 win over the Steelers last Sunday. Here’s a couple highlights from this week’s recap:

Gang Green DOES have some good players, if only they could get a quarterback.
