FCC Will Not Fine Broadcasters For Saying "Redskins" On The Air
The word does not fit the FCC definition of obscenity.
The FCC released a statement Thursday saying it has "dismissed" a petition to make saying Washington's NFL team name on air a finable offense.

In September, a petition was filed to designate the word "Redskins" as an obscene term, under the argument that the word "causes 'psychological harm, not only to Indian and non-Indian children, but also to Indian adults.'"
In today's decision, the FCC found that argument invalid, as the Supreme Court defines obscenity as language that "depicts or describes sexual conduct." It also rejected the claim that the word is profane, under citing the FCC definition as "language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance."
The FCC did not find the word "Redskins" to fit that definition, but did mention that the Commission tries to tread lightly on matters of "racial or religious epithets."
The Washington Redskins are currently appealing a decision by the United States Patent and Trademark office to strip their exclusive rights to the name.
The petition to remove the team trademarks to the name was filed using similar arguments as the petition filed to the FCC.
The Chemist Charged With Supplying A-Rod's Dealer With Performance Enhancing Drugs Pleads Guilty
Paulo Berejuk pleaded guilty to producing testosterone for Biogenesis, the clinic that provided Alex Rodriguez with steroids.
Berejuk, who provided most of the PEDs to Rodriguez's dealer, pleaded guilty to felony conspiracy to distribute testosterone in Miami on Thursday.

The Miami Herald reports Berejuk faces between two and three years in prison for producing performance enhancing drugs in his garage that were then sold to Anthony Bosch, the founder of Biogenesis, and Rodriguez's key provider.
Berejuk reportedly earned $20,000 a month for the performance enhancing drugs he provided to Biogenesis. In January, Rodriguez admitted his steroid use to federal agents and prosecutors. Berejuk's cooperation with authorities allows them to build their case against other parties charged in the Biogenesis scandal.
Berejuk is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 25. The Miami Herald compared his role in the case to that of Walter White, the fictional character on "Breaking Bad" who used his chemistry know-how to produce illegal substances.

49ers Ray McDonald Being Investigated For Sexual Assault
The NFL says the defensive end will be allowed to play on Saturday.
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald is under investigation for a sexual assault allegation that reportedly took place on Dec. 15 at his home in San Jose, according to the San Jose Police Department.

SJPD public information officer Heather Randol told BuzzFeed News in an email:
On December 16, 2014 at approximately 10:43 am, the San Jose Police Department received a call from a local area hospital regarding a possible sexual assault victim who was receiving treatment. Officers responded and made contact with the adult female victim. The victim alleged she was possibly sexually assaulted a day prior. The preliminary investigation revealed the alleged suspect was Ray McDonald.
A search warrant for McDonald's home was issued Tuesday night. No arrests have been made.
Last month, domestic violence charges against McDonald were dropped because his fianceé did not mention she felt she was in physical danger during the initial 911 call.
Damian Trujillo of NBC Bay Area reports the NFL will allow McDonald to play in this week's game.

Michael Garcia spent two years investigating the controversial 2018 and 2022 World Cup bid process, only to have his report distilled into a 42-page summary by FIFA-appointed judge Hans-Joachim Eckert last month.
That publicly-released summary cleared Russia and Qatar of any corruption in their successful bids for the tournaments.

Beau Bennett Is The 15th NHL Player To Be Diagnosed With The Mumps
Players from five teams have come down with the disease.

Bennett is now the 15th NHL player to be diagnosed with the disease this season. Earlier this week, Deadspin noted that he'd spent some time at a children's hospital. Bennett's teammate, Sidney Crosby, was diagnosed with the mumps last week.
The disease has hit multiple players on the Rangers, Ducks, Wild, and Devils.
Mumps is transmitted through saliva, which makes hockey players — who work in close proximity to each other and often make physical contact while playing — particularly susceptible. An infected person can carry the disease for two weeks before exhibiting symptoms, but they are contagious during the entire time.
Players who have contracted the disease have been vaccinated (Sidney Crosby received a booster shot in February), but once the disease enters a community, the health of all members is compromised. This theory is known as "Herd Immunity," which the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has illustrated as such:
