Police Investigate Quarterback Johnny Manziel Over Possible Assault Of Ex-Girlfriend

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel may have been involved in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend on Friday night in Dallas, according to a police report.

The woman called Fort Worth Police just before 2 a.m. Saturday and told officers that she had been involved in a "disturbance" with Manziel, her ex-boyfriend, according to a statement provided to BuzzFeed News by Fort Worth police.

Authorities determined after a preliminary investigation that "a possible assault had occurred" in Dallas or elsewhere outside of Fort Worth.

The two cities' departments are now working together to find out if Manziel committed a criminal offense.

A Dallas Police spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in an email that officers were in the early stages of the investigation and could not comment further.

Manziel's ex-girlfriend also told Fort Worth officers that she was concerned for his "well-being." The officer attempted to contact Manziel and eventually confirmed that he was safe and not in danger.

Last October, Manziel was stopped by police in Ohio for reckless driving. His ex-girlfriend, who was in the car with him that night, accused him of assaulting her. Police said they determined the woman was intoxicated and allowed the couple to continue.

The 23-year-old NFL player also has a history of alcohol abuse. He voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility in January 2015 for four months.

Angelique Kerber has upset Serena Williams in three sets taking the Australian Open title in a surprise victory.

The German tennis star defeated Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, ending the six-time champion's unbeaten streak in finals at Melbourne Park, AP reported.

Williams was the favorite to take out the Australian Open, where she had won all six previous times she'd reached the final, and was trying to equal Steffi Graf's Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

The 34-year-old Williams hadn't lost a set in the first six rounds here until dropping the first on Saturday night against No. 7-seeded Kerber, who was playing in her first major final.

Stagnant Water Will Be Removed Near The Olympics To Curb Zika Virus

Brazil, which will host the 2016 Olympics, is in the midst of an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus.

The International Olympic Committee announced a plan on Friday to help keep Zika-carrying mosquitoes away from Olympic venues during the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio De Janeiro.

Workers will conduct daily inspections for and remove puddles of stagnant water that could attract the infected mosquitoes. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus with mild symptoms that has been linked to thousands of cases of birth defects in Brazil.

The IOC said Friday it is "closely monitoring the situation with Zika in Brazil. We are also in close communication with the WHO and the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee on this topic." The IOC asserted that "the Rio 2016 Games will take place during the winter months of August and September, when the drier, cooler climate significantly reduces the presence of mosquitoes and therefore the risk of infection."

"We remain confident that there will be a safe environment for successful and enjoyable Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," said the IOC.

In a statement, United States Olympic Committee spokesperson Patrick Sandusky said:

We are closely monitoring the situation through the CDC and have ongoing contact with the International Olympic Committee, the organizing officials in Rio, the World Health Organization and infectious disease specialists with expertise in tropical diseases, including the Zika virus. Additionally, we're taking steps to ensure that our delegation and those affiliated with Team USA are aware of the CDC's recommendations regarding travel to Brazil.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization said that 3 to 4 million people in South and North America could become infected with the Zika virus in the next 12 months. In Brazil, the Zika virus has been linked to about 3,500 babies being born with a defect known as microcephaly, which causes the baby to have an abnormally small brain.
