Police Investigate Quarterback Johnny Manziel Over Possible Assault Of Ex-Girlfriend

The Cleveland Browns player was part of a “disturbance” in Dallas Friday night, and has not been arrested.

Scott Eklund / AP

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel may have been involved in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend on Friday night in Dallas, according to a police report.

The woman called Fort Worth Police just before 2 a.m. Saturday and told officers that she had been involved in a "disturbance" with Manziel, her ex-boyfriend, according to a statement provided to BuzzFeed News by Fort Worth police.

Authorities determined after a preliminary investigation that "a possible assault had occurred" in Dallas or elsewhere outside of Fort Worth.

The two cities' departments are now working together to find out if Manziel committed a criminal offense.

A Dallas Police spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in an email that officers were in the early stages of the investigation and could not comment further.

Manziel's ex-girlfriend also told Fort Worth officers that she was concerned for his "well-being." The officer attempted to contact Manziel and eventually confirmed that he was safe and not in danger.

Last October, Manziel was stopped by police in Ohio for reckless driving. His ex-girlfriend, who was in the car with him that night, accused him of assaulting her. Police said they determined the woman was intoxicated and allowed the couple to continue.

The 23-year-old NFL player also has a history of alcohol abuse. He voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility in January 2015 for four months.

Angelique Kerber has upset Serena Williams in three sets taking the Australian Open title in a surprise victory.

The German tennis star defeated Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, ending the six-time champion's unbeaten streak in finals at Melbourne Park, AP reported.

Williams was the favorite to take out the Australian Open, where she had won all six previous times she'd reached the final, and was trying to equal Steffi Graf's Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

The 34-year-old Williams hadn't lost a set in the first six rounds here until dropping the first on Saturday night against No. 7-seeded Kerber, who was playing in her first major final.

Stagnant Water Will Be Removed Near The Olympics To Curb Zika Virus

Brazil, which will host the 2016 Olympics, is in the midst of an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus.

A health worker in Brazil calls out to residents to remain inside during fumigation to eradicate the mosquito which transmits the Zika virus.

The International Olympic Committee announced a plan on Friday to help keep Zika-carrying mosquitoes away from Olympic venues during the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio De Janeiro.

Workers will conduct daily inspections for and remove puddles of stagnant water that could attract the infected mosquitoes. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus with mild symptoms that has been linked to thousands of cases of birth defects in Brazil.

The IOC said Friday it is "closely monitoring the situation with Zika in Brazil. We are also in close communication with the WHO and the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee on this topic." The IOC asserted that "the Rio 2016 Games will take place during the winter months of August and September, when the drier, cooler climate significantly reduces the presence of mosquitoes and therefore the risk of infection."

"We remain confident that there will be a safe environment for successful and enjoyable Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," said the IOC.

In a statement, United States Olympic Committee spokesperson Patrick Sandusky said:

We are closely monitoring the situation through the CDC and have ongoing contact with the International Olympic Committee, the organizing officials in Rio, the World Health Organization and infectious disease specialists with expertise in tropical diseases, including the Zika virus. Additionally, we're taking steps to ensure that our delegation and those affiliated with Team USA are aware of the CDC's recommendations regarding travel to Brazil.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization said that 3 to 4 million people in South and North America could become infected with the Zika virus in the next 12 months. In Brazil, the Zika virus has been linked to about 3,500 babies being born with a defect known as microcephaly, which causes the baby to have an abnormally small brain.

He told SwimSwam Magazine the weird ritual started when he was a wiry kid competing with bigger boys. “Being so small I’d always get intimidated… every time I was going to race I’d just get scared shitless.”

Condorelli's father Joseph, who has been training him since age five, told him the best way to get over his nerves was to pretend nobody else was around.

Tennis Officials To Review Anti-Corruption Unit Amid Match Fixing Claims: Report

The move comes after a joint investigation by BuzzFeed News and the BBC uncovered evidence that the Tennis Integrity Unit failed to rigorously investigate possible match fixing among dozens of players.

Tennis officials on Wednesday are expected to announce new measures to address claims of rampant match fixing.

Vincent Thian / AP

The announcement was slated to be made at a news conference Wednesday at the Australian Open, where Association of Tennis Professionals President Chris Kermode, International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty and Wimbledon Chairman Philip Brook are expected to attend.

The move comes after a joint BuzzFeed News and BBC investigation found evidence suggesting match-fixing has run rampant in the sport for years with little action on the part of tennis officials.

To address those findings, tennis executives are expected to announce an independent review of the sports anti-corruption team, the Tennis Integrity Unit, according to the Associated Press, which cited a source who spoke on condition anonymity

The review will be run out of London, the AP added.

The sport's governing bodies have been meeting at Melbourne Park, the site of the Australian Open, to discuss the scandal, which unfolded as the tournament got underway, the New York Times reported.

As early as Sunday, a major gambling website suspended betting an Australian Open doubles match featuring little-known players Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot against Spain's Lara Arruabarrena and David Marrero after irregular patterns raised suspicions that it had been fixed.

Florida State Settles With Former Student Who Accused Jameis Winston Of Rape

The lawsuit claimed FSU “concealed and obstructed the sexual assault investigation so that Mr. Winston could play football.”

Jeff Gross / Getty Images

Florida State University has reached a $950,000 settlement with Erica Kinsman, the former student who accused quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault in 2012.

Kinsman, who filed the lawsuit under the name "Jane Doe," publicly identified herself in a 2015 documentary.

In her Title IX lawsuit, Kinsman asserted that FSU violated federal law by refusing to investigate and by covering up her allegations of a sexual assault on Dec. 7, 2012, as well as a second woman's report of sexual misconduct, by fellow student Jameis Winston. Kinsman claimed the FSU's actions were carried out so Winston could play football for more than two years afterwards.

Kinsman had told Tallahassee police that she was raped at an off-campus apartment, but did not know the identity of her alleged assailant until she was in class with Winston the next semester. Kinsman reported his identity to Tallahassee police, but their investigation did not lead to charges, and Winston was cleared of wrongdoing during a 2014 code of conduct hearing by Florida State.

Kinsman and Winston have pending lawsuits against each other in Florida. The university is also being investigated by the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.

Kinsman's $950,000 settlement includes a five-year commitment from FSU to sexual assault awareness, prevention, and training programs. The school also agreed to increase transparency through publication of annual reports about its programs to deter and address campus sexual assault.

However, FSU did not admit to liability in the settlement, USA Today reported.

And in a statement, FSU President John Thrasher said the settlement was a financial decision.

"We have an obligation to our students, their parents and Florida taxpayers to deal with this case, as we do all litigation, in a financially responsible manner," he said. "With all the economic demands we face, at some point it doesn't make sense to continue even though we are convinced we would have prevailed."

Kinsman's attorneys called it the largest settlement of its kind for alleged Title IX discrimination or indifference to sexual assault.

FSUe announced that the former student is expected to receive $250,000 of the settlement and her attorneys will receive $700,000.

Kinsman, a Florida native who is now finishing her degree at a different university, said she hoped the settlement will also have lasting effects at the campus.

"I'll always be disappointed that I had to leave the school I dreamed of attending since I was little. I am happy that FSU has committed to continue making changes in order to ensure a safer environment for all students," she said in a statement. "My hope is that the federal investigation of my complaint by the Office of Civil Rights will produce even more positive change, not just at FSU, but across the country."

Winston, who left Florida State after three years to enter the NFL, recently finished his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Transgender Athletes Can Now Compete In Olympics Without Sex Reassignment Surgery

The International Olympic Committee has released a new set of guidelines for transgender athletes.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

Fabrice Coffrini / AFP / Getty Images

The International Olympic Committee on Monday updated its guidelines for transgender athletes, saying Olympians do not need to undergo sex reassignment surgery to compete in the games.

"It is necessary ... that trans athletes are not excluded from the opportunity to participate in sporting competition," the guideline document states. "To require surgical anatomical changes as a pre-condition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights."

Previously, transgender athletes were required by the IOC to undergo sex reassignment surgery and hormone therapy to compete in Olympic events.

The IOC's new gender-specific guidelines vary greatly for trans male athletes and trans female athletes. The resulting guidelines suggest that people assigned male at birth are naturally stronger and more athletically inclined than people assigned female at birth.

"Those who transition from female to male are eligible to compete in the male category without restriction," the IOC announced.

For athletes who transition from male to female, eligibility is subject to stipulations regarding self-identification and levels of testosterone.

When an athlete identifies as female, "[t]he declaration cannot be changed, for sporting purposes, for a minimum of four years."

To become eligible, a trans female athlete "must demonstrate that her total testosterone level in serum has been below 10nmol/L for at least 12 months prior to her first competition." Testosterone levels for trans female athletes "[m]ust remain below 10 nmol/L throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category," and they "may" be tested regularly to determine testosterone levels.

The IOC document references a 2015 decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding hyperandrogenism, the presence of naturally elevated levels of testosterone in female athletes.

The court in 2015 vacated the International Association of Athletics Federation's regulations that essentially banned athletes with hyperandrogenism, saying the association didn't provide enough scientific evidence about the relationship between "enhanced testosterone levels and improved athletic performance in hyperandrogenic athletes."

In its new transgender guidelines, the IOC says the association should presenting evidence to the court "to support the reinstatement of its hyperandrogenism rules."

But, instead of banning athletes with hyperandrogenism "not eligible for female competition the athlete should be eligible to compete in male competition."

"That's What Tennis Players Do": Ex-Pro Pleads Guilty To Match-Fixing

Nick Lindahl told friends he intended to lose a match in 2013, allowing them to place bets on the outcome.

Australian former professional tennis player Nick Lindahl has pleaded guilty to deliberately losing a match in 2013 in order to obtain financial advantage.

Lindahl, 27, once a rising star of Australian tennis, allegedly told police "that's what tennis players do" when asked why he had "tanked" the match, Sydney's Burwood local court heard on Monday.

The court was told that Lindahl, through a third party, offered to lose a match at the Toowoomba Futures Six Tournament in September 2013 if his opponent was willing to pay him money to do so. The court heard the opponent, Andrew Corbett, refused the offer, believing he could beat Lindahl in his own right.

Corbett then flagged the offer with tennis authorities, who began an investigation and contacted Victoria Police.

Police prosecutor Kate Young told the court that Lindahl then informed two friends he would tank the match, allowing them to place bets on the outcome.

The court heard that betting agency Sportsbet became suspicious of betting activity around the match, and suspended betting.

Lindahl was arrested at his Sydney home in February last year.

Young told the court that when questioned by police as to why he had thrown the match, Lindahl replied that "that's what tennis players do" when they don't think they can win.

Lindahl, who reached a career-high ranking of 187, has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he attempted to conceal the match-fixing by telling a friend to destroy evidence.

The court heard that nine months after the match, authorities intercepted a phone call between Lindahl and his friend, Matthew Fox, in which Lindahl advised Fox to dispose of incriminating computer and mobile phone data that could implicate the two in match-fixing.

The court was told Lindahl was overheard telling Fox to "just get rid of everything" on a phone app and to hide his laptop at a friend's house.

When Fox asked what he should do if he was called in for an interview by authorities, Lindahl allegedly told him to hide his phone in a drawer.

The case comes on the same day that online betting on a mixed doubles match at the Australian Open was suspended by a major gambling website after suspicious activity suggested the game might have been fixed.

Judge Michelle Goodwin will hand down her decision on 15 April.

Report: Match Fixing Suspected At Australian Open Tennis Match

The mixed doubles match took place days after a BuzzFeed News investigation revealed evidence suggesting rampant match fixing in the sport.

Online betting on a tennis mixed doubles match at the Australian Open was suspended Sunday by a major gambling website after suspicious activity suggested the game might have been fixed, the New York Times reported.

The potentially fixed match on Sunday came just days after a BuzzFeed News and BBC investigation showed evidence suggesting match fixing has run rampant in the sport for years with little action on the part of tennis officials.

Pinnacle Sports, one of the world's largest online gaming sites, told the Times unusually large amounts of money poured in for the Melbourne match, featuring little known players Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot against Spain's Lara Arruabarrena and David Marrero.

Hlavackova and Kubot won the match, 6-0, 6-3, with the first set lasting only 20 minutes.

The head of Pinnacle Sports, Marco Blume, told the Times that the match should have been an obscure contest with little money wagered.

Instead, he said money poured in, mostly for Hlavackova and Kubot — an indication the match was rigged and prompting Pinnacle Sports to suspend betting.

"We saw a small number of people placing a large amount of money," Blume said.

The website's chief said police were informed of the matter.

This is a developing news story. Check back for updates or follow BuzzFeed News on Twitter.

Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Head Coach Mid-Season

The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach David Blatt halfway through his second year. Assistant head coach Tyronn Lue will take over with a "multi-year-deal," according to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Cavaliers are leading the Eastern Conference with a record of 30-11. Blatt was in his second year of coaching the Cavaliers.

Shortly after Blatt agreed to become the Cavaliers' head coach in 2014, Cleveland-native LeBron James decided to return to the Cavaliers from the Miami Heat. James and Blatt have had an openly dysfunctional working relationship, with James often appearing to disagree with or override Blatt's coaching decisions.

James "was informed of the decision to fire David Blatt today, he was not consulted on decision," according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. However, Wojnarowski reports that James and his agent have actively pushed for Lue to become Cavaliers' head coach.

"Ban Them For Life": Tennis Stars Say More Must Be Done To Stamp Out Corruption

As more players and officials open up about corruption in the sport, the game’s administrators remain silent.

The 1987 Wimbledon champion was responding to a BuzzFeed News and BBC investigation exposing secret files containing evidence of match-fixing and inaction at the highest levels of tennis.

But on Thursday, at a media event at the Australian Open, Cash allowed that "there's some stuff [match-fixing] at lower levels, but that's human nature".

He said that while there was always going to be a temptation to fix matches for lower-ranked players struggling to make ends meet, he believed authorities were well on top of the issue at a competitive level.

"These players are struggling to make a living, and that's the bottom line," he said. "They're really struggling and some people are going to be tempted to do the wrong thing.

"It's a bit of a storm in a teacup, but officials do need to keep on top of this [at lower levels]."

One of those lower-ranked players, Australian Nick Lindahl, will face a Sydney court on Monday, accused of intentionally throwing a match at a 2013 tournament in Toowoomba, Queensland.

One of those lower-ranked players, Australian Nick Lindahl, will face a Sydney court on Monday, accused of intentionally throwing a match at a 2013 tournament in Toowoomba, Queensland.

The loss was flagged by a betting agency after it detected unusual betting trends against his lower ranked opponent, sparking an investigation by NSW police.

Lindahl, who reached a career-high ranking of 187, allegedly told a friend, Matthew Fox, himself a former player and coach, that he would throw the match. Fox has pleaded guilty and been fined for using corrupt information to bet on the match.

Those involved in ensuring the integrity of the sport agree with Cash's assessment that it's these lower-ranked players who are most at risk of corruption. But this week, a host of past and present players and officials have accused the game's administrators of sitting on their hands when it comes to match-fixing.

One of the most outspoken players on the ATP tour is men's world No. 2 Andy Murray, who this week blasted tennis officials for the way corruption issues have been handled, saying the game has suffered as a result.

Murray wrote a scathing editorial saying tennis officials needed to be more transparent about the scale of corruption in the game.

"I don't care whether the tennis authorities are seen to be doing enough; I care whether they are doing enough," he wrote. And I don't know if they are because I have no idea how much money is invested in the Tennis Integrity Unit [TIU].

"So much money is gambled in tennis during a year – it's a huge industry. Maybe more could be done prevent corruption but I have no idea how much money tennis spends in comparison to other sports."

Murray also called on officials to work with younger players, who are seen as more vulnerable to match-fixing.

John Newcombe, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, said any player found guilty of fixing matches should be banned for life.

"Anyone who does it, there's no second chances," he said. "You're kicked out for life as far as I'm concerned."

Newcombe added that young players don't necessarily understand the long-term effect that taking part in corruption could have on their careers as well as their lives.

"If you get involved with these people you're in a steel trap – they won't let you out," Newcombe said.

"Once you make a mistake of agreeing to do something, they'll hold it over you for the rest of your life."
